In this webinar brought to you by the CAS Archives and Artifacts committee, Dr Orser will present an overview of the Canadian anesthesia workforce, presenting the decades of historical antecedents to our current health and human resources challenges. She will describe the present state of our national anesthesia workforce and discuss strategies in place to improve access to anesthesia care given the significant resource limitations facing our health care system. 

After participating in this activity, participants will be able to:  

  1. Discuss key historical developments that impacted today's anesthesia workforce.
  2. Discuss the current state of the anesthesia workforce in Canada.
  3. Identify strategies to enhance access to anesthesia services through research, education, and innovative care models.

Presenter: Dr Beverley Orser
University of Toronto


Dr Orser is the Chair of the Department of Anesthesia at the University of Toronto, a Professor of Anesthesia and Physiology at the University of Toronto and a practicing anesthesiologist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto, Canada. She received a Medical Doctorate from Queen’s University (1981), a Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (1987), and a PhD in medical science from the University of Toronto (1995). Her postgraduate clinical training was completed at the Royal Columbian Hospital in British Columbia, McMaster University in Hamilton, Oxford University, and the University of Toronto.

Her research and leadership contributions have been recognized by the Gold Medal from the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society (2017), the first Frontiers in Anesthesia Research Award from the International Anesthesia Research Society (1995), the first Canada Research Chair awarded to an anesthesiologist (2003) and recognition awards from the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland and the Peter Dresel Award in Pharmacology from Dalhousie University (2017). She was inducted as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in 2013.

Dr Mike Wong is the Chair of the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society Archives and Artifacts committee. He is an Assistant Professor in the Dalhousie University Department of Anesthesia, Pain Management & Perioperative Medicine. He practices in Saint John, New Brunswick, devoting his time to both multi-specialty anesthesiology and chronic pain management. He is also involved with the Canadian Pain Society, International Anesthesia Research Society, American Association for the History of Medicine, and Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology. He is a recipient of the Detweiler Travelling Fellowship from the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons and the Paul M. Wood Fellowship from the Wood Library-Museum.
