The Anesthesiology Portfolio

The Portfolio is a new instrument for the promotion of self-directed learning. There are many variations on how portfolios are created and implemented. A portfolio provides a mechanism to collate and record evidence of learning. However, the key characteristic that sets a portfolio apart from a simple log of learning activities is the inclusion of reflection by the trainee on the experiences recorded.

Such reflection is the hallmark of the effective adult learner. A portfolio supports adult learning by allowing demonstration of the reflective process to instructors, and more importantly by reinforcing the importance of ongoing reflection to the trainees as they develop habits for their life-long pursuit of learning.

The Anesthesiology Portfolio created by ACUDA is based on the competencies of CanMEDs. It is divided into sections according to the seven roles. This document was created by collaboration amongst the members of ACUDA education and was specifically designed to reflect educational tools and methods used in Canadian Anesthesiology training programs.
