This session will provide an overview of the basics of Target-controlled infusion (TCI) technology including how pharmacokinetic (pK) models are developed and implemented and describe its use. The second part of the session will focus on the new Eleveld general purpose model for propofol, exploring its benefits for total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA).

After participating in this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the basics of TCI
  2. Use TCI effectively to titrate to effect
  3. Describe the benefits of the Eleveld general purpose model for propofol
This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and approved by the Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society. You may claim a maximum of 1 hour (credits are automatically calculated).

Moderator: Dr Melinda Davis
University of Calgary

Dr Melinda Davis completed medical school and anesthesiology training in Australia, followed by a fellowship in neuroanesthesiology at the University of Calgary. She has been a staff anesthesiologist at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary since 2005. She divides her time between a clinical neuroanesthesiology practice and a career in medical education that has spanned undergraduate medical education through to faculty development. Dr Davis is currently the Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education, at the University of Calgary and the Chair of the Neuroanesthesia section of the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society.

Presenter: Dr Philippe Picard
CSSSRN Rimouski - Université Laval

After completing his MD at Sherbrooke University and anesthesia training program at Université Laval (Québec), Dr Picard has been in practice in Rimouski, Qc, since 2006. This regional hospital is also a teaching center as a satellite campus of Université Laval. Dr Picard is a clinical instructor, a member of the local (hospital) sustainability committee, as well as of the sustainability committee of the AAQ (Association des Anesthésiologistes du Québec).  He developed an interest in TIVA-TCI in 2021, in part for environmental reasons but also because he felt it was lacking in his training.  He quickly realized that significant advances in the technique had been made and were implemented all around the world, leaving the North Americans behind. He now uses the technique for all anesthetics, including pediatric surgery, bariatric surgery, frail patients, etc. Dr Picard has joined the UK-based SIVA (Society for Intravenous Anesthesia, 100% dedicated to TIVA) and has kept contact with many international experts in the field.
